President's Note

We've raced through seven months of this year and how have you gone so far at work or in your business? It's often healthy to take stock for a few minutes to check if you are on track for success this year and look at your milestones ahead. Some of the milestones I've noticed that have zipped past me over the past 7 months include the launch of ADSL 2+ services, the full EVDO RevA deployment and of course the iPhone Launch. As we head toward the silly season make sure you have your ducks in a row and remember – there's an election soon!

Barcamp mobile

Aaron Davidson, CEO of well known mobile application developer SimWorks, reports on the Barcamp Mobile event held recently in Auckland:

I recently had the pleasure of attending Barcamp Auckland (http://bca.geek.nz/). Those of you that read my post about the Wellington Barcamp Mobile event in April will have some idea about what a barcamp actually is.  For the rest of you, a quick visit to Wikipedia(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barcamp) will bring you into the light!

As with Barcamp Mobile, the Auckland event created value to attendees through channelling the interests and passions of those at the event.  It sounds like a recipe for disaster but somehow it seems to work.

Unlike Barcamp Mobile, the Auckland event had no particular focus at all other than that everyone at the event had some interest in technology. Unsurprisingly, given the iPhone was launched the day prior, there was a lot of discussion and debate around that.

There was certainly plenty at the event to interest both the technical and commercial sides of any organisation.  For my part I had a great time joining in a couple of start-up related sessions, a project planning session and enjoyed leading the session on mobile application development.  Another
member of the team attended many of the esoteric technical sessions and
assures me that they were excellent as well.

Once again I've come away with a host of new contacts and opportunities and picked up a some useful tips.  How Barcamps actually don't just descend into chaos I'm not really sure.  Within the context of a couple of simple rules they just seem to successfully self organise.  So that's two for two for me so far!  Anyone interested in dipping their toes into the barcamp waters need only keep an eye on the barcamp NZ site (http://www.barcamp.org.nz/) for events coming up.

See you at Wireless Wednesday on 6th August!
